Party Themes. Splish-Splash Party.

What's the only ingredient you need for a successful Splish-Splash party? Water! Watch the wet ones frolic in the surf and sun. If you don't live near the surf, make your own Water Wonderland right in the backyard. It's time to get wet!

INVITATIONS    up
  • For a fascinating underwater invitation, use a permanent felt-tip pen to write the party details on a piece of colorful plastic, such as a cut-up beach ball or margarine tub lids. Insert the plastic invitation into a scalable lunch baggy. Fill the bag half-full with blue-tinted water (use blue food coloring). Add plastic or metallic confetti to make the water sparkle, then glue the bag shut with superglue. Allow to dry, then place in a small box and mail.

COSTUMES    up
  • Have the kids come dressed in clothes they don't mind getting wet. Bathing suits are preferred, but it's sometimes fun to get wet in shorts and a T-shirt for a change.
  • Ask the kids to bring beach towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats.

DECORATIONS    up
  • Host the party outside where the water is plentiful and you don't have to worry about making a mess.
  • Cut out blue waves from construction paper, and tack them to the top of the fence, to give the feeling of being underwater.
  • Get out the sprinklers with a variety of heads and hoses, the kiddy pool, and any other fun water toys you have around the house.
  • Don't forget the squirt guns, water pails, and sponges!

GAMES    up
  • Have a Water War with squirt guns, wet sponges, and water pails. Give the kids pan lids so they can protect themselves from the onslaught.
  • Create a Splash Machine. Have the kids line up, then pass buckets of water from person to person, and dump them into the kiddy pool. Watch the kids get all wet!
  • Throw coins into the pool, and let the kids scramble for them.
  • Toss a bunch of balloons into the kiddy pool, and let the kids try to pop the slippery balloons by sitting on them.
  • Have a tug-of-war at the kiddy pool. Separate the kids into two teams, station them on opposite sides of the pool, and have each team try to pull the other team into the water using rope.
  • Make a slippery slide on the lawn. Spread large plastic garbage bags over the grass, and attach a hose at one end.
  • Play Snake in the Grass. Have one player turn the sprinkler on and off, without looking at the rest of the players. Have the other players run through the area where the sprinklers are. The player who first makes it from one end of the area to the other without getting sprayed wins.

ACTIVITIES    up
  • Make your own Spongies to use in the pool or bathtub. Give the kids colored sponges, and let them cut the sponges into various shapes. Then let them take the sponges into the water to play, or have the kids use the sponges to paint with tempera paint on large sheets of paper.
  • Fill the kiddy pool with water, and add 1/3 cup dishwashing liquid (Dawn works best) and 2 teaspoons glycerin; mix well. Twist metal coat hangers or pipe cleaners into shapes, and use them to create bubbles from the giant pool of solution. Warn the kids not to splash in the solution, since the soap will sting their eyes.

FOOD    up
  • Make Frozen Slushies. Rll paperc with fruit juice and place them Inl freezer for two hours. Remove and stir with a spoon. Return to the freezer for another half hour. Remove, stir again, and serve.
  • Make Popsicles from fruit juice, and add a slice of fruit for fun.
  • Fill hollow oranges with fruit juice, freeze, and serve as snacks.
  • Serve watermelon slices.

RAINBOW CAKE    up
  • Bake two round cakes; cool.
  • Cut the cakes in half crosswise.
  • Place all four halves together to form a large half circle, and frost the sides so they stick together.
  • Turn the cake onto its flat side, with the rounded side up.
  • Divide a can of white frosting into individual bowls, and tint each bowl a different color - to make the colors of the rainbow.
  • Frost the cake in rows to create a rainbow effect.

FAVORS    up
  • Send the kids home with new towels.
  • Hand out squirt guns, water sponges, sand pails, water goggles, or fancy sprinkler heads.
  • Give the kids bubble solution to take home.

VARIATIONS    up
  • Have the party at a lake or pool.
  • If you have water slides nearby, spend a hot afternoon sliding your way to cool, wet fun.
  • If it rains, rent Flipper or Free Willie, and watch the video while you picnic on beach towels in bathing suits.

HELPFUL HINTS    up
  • Make sure everyone knows they're going to get wet at this wild party.
  • Have the kids wear sunglasses to protect their eyes.
  • Tell all the kids to use sunscreen.
