Party Themes. Makeover Party.

Invite the kids over for a whole new look with your Makeover Party! Include makeup, hair styles, clothes, and accessories. Then get out the camera and shoot the new models on the runway!

INVITATIONS    up
  • Get photos of the kids from parents or yearbooks: photocopy each picture twice. Make cards from construction paper. Glue one picture on the outside of the card and one on the inside. Write "Before..." as a heading for the outside picture, and add warts, bad hair, freckles, and all sorts of funny face additions. Write "After..." on the inside picture, with the party details on the facing page. Then add fancy makeup and hair to the inside picture using felt-tip pens, to create a "makeover."

COSTUMES    up
  • Have the kids come dressed in casual clothes, but ask them to bring along fancy outfits to change into when the makeover is complete.
  • Ask the kids to bring what makeup they have, or provide some yourself.

DECORATIONS    up
  • Set out some portable mirrors around the room so the kids can see the makeovers take place.
  • Get out cameras-video and Polaroid- to take photos and to use them as props.
  • Hang up pictures of famous models and draw mustaches, glasses, and warts on their face. Write "Before" across the top.
  • Mount smaller pictures on construction paper and use them as place mats.
  • Display all the makeup and hair-care products you'll be using for the makeovers.

GAMES    up
  • Play Beauty Shop. Cut out products from beauty magazines, omitting the names of the products (or blacken the names out with a felt-tip pen). Glue the pictures onto construction paper, with the names of the products written lightly on the backs. Have the kids sit in a circle. Hold up one picture at a time and have the kids write down the names of the products (tell them to keep the answers secret). When all the pictures have been displayed, read the answers out loud to see who guessed the most correct answers.
  • Play Beauty Shop using TV jingles. Record jingles on a cassette tape, leaving out the names of the products. Play the tape for the kids and have them guess the products.

ACTIVITIES    up
  • Do makeovers on one another, using makeup, hair products, and accessories. Use a beauty book as a guide and have each guest pick out a picture to follow. Buy inexpensive makeup kits for each of the guests, have the guests bring their own makeup, or get cosmetic samples from makeup counters. Discourage the guests from sharing makeup to reduce the risk of infections.
  • Have the kids try exotic new looks for fun.
  • Provide lots of variety in makeup, such as blush, lipstick, powder, eyeliner, mascara, and so on.
  • Have the kids try on false eyelashes, fake moles, false fingernails, and so on.
  • Let the kids do one another's hair.
  • Dress the kids up in their fancy clothes, let them model their new look, and take glamour pictures.

FOOD    up
  • Serve elegant foods, such as canapes (tiny sandwiches) and bubbling apple juice (apple juice mixed with club soda or ginger ale). Serve the food on your best dishes and use champagne glasses for beverages.
  • Make fun-to-eat finger foods so the kids don't have to stop to eat. Let them snack as they work on one another.

MAKEOVER CAKE    up
  • Bake a round or rectangular cake; cool.
  • Find a hand mirror that's smaller than the cake, wash it, and place it on top.
  • Frost the cake all around the mirror and down the sides.
  • Add candles around the mirror and light them to create a "lighted mirror."
  • Let the kids look into the cake and see their own reflections, then blow out the candles, remove the mirror, and eat the cake!

FAVORS    up
  • Send the kids home with new hair brushes, makeup, barrettes, fake fingernails, small mirrors, ribbons, or anything else you used during the Makeover Party!

VARIATIONS    up
  • Take the kids to a beauty college, and have the students practice their skills on your guests.
  • Hare a beautician come to the party to teach the kids how to do their own makeovers.

HELPFUL HINTS    up
  • Keep wet wipes and paper towels handy for continuous cleanup. Makeup can get messy!
