Party Themes. Animal Party.
Host an animal-themed party, and treat the kids to an afternoon with
their favorite dogs, cats, mice, and hamsters! Have the kids bring their
real pets to the party - if you've got the courage - or have them bring stuffed
pets for a make-believe Pets on Parade Party.
INVITATIONS
up
- Cut out pictures of dogs and cats and glue them onto homemade cards. Draw speech balloons
and have the animals invite the kids and their pets to the party.
- Send a snapshot of your dog or cat to each child, with the party details written on the back.
- Ask the kids to bring their stuffed animals (or real pets-as long as they're in cages!) to the party.
COSTUMES
up
- Tell the kids to come dressed as their favorite animals.
- Award prizes for creative costumes, with such categories as cutest, fuzziest,
funniest, most vicious-looking, and so on. Make sure that everyone gets a prize.
DECORATIONS
up
- Place stuffed animals around the room.
- Make animal-shaped balloons and hang them from the ceiling.
- Cut out pictures of animals and use the pictures to decorate the tablecloth,
place settings, and front door.
- Play animal songs or sounds for background music to welcome your guests.
GAMES
up
- Play Animal Bingo. Draw one extra-large bingo card on tagboard. Draw a grid of
squares, and fill each square with the name or picture of an animal. Copy the bingo
card onto sturdy paper, enough for all guests. On individually cut-up squares, write
or draw the same animals. Hand out the Animal Bingo squares, call out the animals
as you pick them from the card pile, and have the kids set dog biscuits or cat treats
onto the matching bingo squares. The first player to get five in a row across, down,
or horizontally wins a pet toy!
ACTIVITIES
up
- Have the kids sit in a circle and make animal noises one at a time, while the
other kids guess the animal.
- Have the kids act out an animal, without making any sounds, while the other
kids guess the animal.
- Play Make-a-Critter. Fold a large sheet of white construction paper in half and
then in half again. Unfold the paper, and spread it out on the table. Give the kids
crayons or felt-tip pens. Have one kid draw an animal head in the top rectangle of
the paper. When the kid finishes, fold back the top rectangle so it's hidden from
view, and only the three remaining rectangles show. Then pass the paper to the left,
and have that kid draw the body and arms of an animal in the next rectangle. Repeat,
having the kids draw legs in the third rectangle, and feet in the fourth rectangle.
When they've finished, unfold the paper to see what new animal the kids have created.
If you like, pass around more than one piece of paper at the same time, so the kids
can create a whole bunch of new animals.
- Give each kid a plastic dog/cat dish. Have them write their pets' names on the
dishes and decorate them on the outside with permanent felt-tip markers, paint, and
other decorative materials. (Don't use glitter, though. If the pets will use the
dish, the glitter may come off and get onto the food.)
FOOD
up
- Give the kids animal crackers as a snack.
- Make animal sandwiches cut with animal-shaped cookie cutters.
- Make cookies cut to look like dog biscuits.
- Serve make-believe animal food, such as tuna "cat food," cereal "dog food,"
Goldfish crackers "fish food," and so on.
DOG BONE CAKE
up
- Bake a loaf cake and four cupcakes; cool.
- Set two cupcakes on each end of the loaf to make a dog bone shape.
- Frost the loaf and the cupcakes with chocolate frosting.
- Write a dog biscuit logo across the top.
FAVORS
up
- Give the kids anything for a pet: fur brushes, fancy collars or tags,
chew toys, pet snacks, and so on.
- Have the kids take home the dishes they decorated during the party.
- Give the kids small books about dogs, cats, and other pets.
VARIATIONS
up
- Take the kids to a dog or cat show to see all the fancy breeds and fluffy tails.
- Go to a movie or rent a video that features an animal, such as a talking pig,
an animated mouse, or a cartoon bear.
HELPFUL HINTS
up
- Ask the kids to bring their animals in cages, so the cats and dogs don't
fight or require lots of attention.
